The Elgin High School varsity softball team kept its roll going through 5A-District 23 games this past week as the Lady Wildcats won versus Pflugerville Hendrickson High School and Georgetown East View High School at home.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS 1, HENDRICKSON LADY HAWKS 0

Behind a masterful performance March 26 by Elgin senior pitcher Jessica Cantrell, the Lady Wildcats were able to score their lone run late in a 1-0 victory over Hendrickson.

Cantell threw a no-hitter in seven innings pitched, as she dominated the Lady Hawks’ offense with 16 strikeouts and only one walk allowed.

Despite only two hits on the night for the Lady Wildcats on offense, one of them made all the difference as sophomore Bianca Galindo led off the sixth inning with a solo home run and broke a scoreless tie to give Elgin its lone run of the night.

Hendrickson got the tying run on base to lead off the seventh frame via error, but Cantrell slammed the door shut on a potential rally, striking out two of the final three hitters to preserve the 1-0 shutout victory.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS 8, EAST VIEW LADY PATRIOTS 2

After East View scored its only two runs of the game in the top of the first inning, Elgin settled in March 28 as the Lady Wildcats put together a strong team performance with an 8-2 win.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth frame, Elgin tied the game up 2-2 on a two-run double by senior Danielle King and took its first lead of the night with a two-out RBI single by junior Gabriella Sandoval.

In the fifth inning, following an RBI sacrifice bunt by freshman Jaelyn Barker, Cantrell hit her first home run of the season to increase the lead to 6-2. Elgin added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double by senior Emily Sumner.

Cantrell was again dominant in the circle for the Lady Wildcats as she pitched seven innings with 11 strikeouts, one walk and both runs allowed were unearned.

Elgin (13-7 overall, 6-2 district record), under Head Coach Pete Moreno, played at Pflugerville Connally Tuesday night, and return home Friday, April 5 at 7 p.m. to host district frontrunner Georgetown High School.
