Against a Georgetown Lady Eagles squad that had won each of its first nine 5A-District 23 games by at least 10 runs, Elgin held its own all night thanks to strong team defense and a pitching performance for the ages by Jessica Cantrell.

In a marathon 11 innings and 151 pitches thrown in the circle, Cantrell was dominant against a powerhouse Georgetown team as she struck out 21 batters, allowed just two hits and issued only two walks.

The Lady Wildcats came up in the bottom of the 11th inning as Cantrell reached on an error and had pinch-runner Adriana Sandoval come in for her. Following a single by Danielle King and a sacrifice bunt by Trinity Martinez, the Lady Wildcats had runners in scoring position. Gabriella Sandoval was the hero for Elgin as she knocked an RBI single up the middle to score Adrianna Sandoval, securing the 1-0 upset victory.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS 18, CONNALLY LADY COUGARS 0 Earlier in the week April 2, the Lady Wildcats made easy work of Pf lugerville Connally High School on the road with an 18-0 rout of the Lady Cougars.

With a 6-0 lead entering the top of the fourth inning, Elgin opened the floodgates on offense with 12 runs scored to put the game completely out of reach as every player in the Lady Wildcats’ starting lineup drove in at least one run.

Jaylan Roberson and Gabriella Sandoval drove in three runs apiece, while Bianca Galindo, Mackenzie Farris and Danielle King had two RBI each. Emily Sumner, Gabriella King and Cantrell each had one run driven in during the dominant win.

Cantrell pitched the first three innings in the circle with six strikeouts and no walks, while Gabriella Sandoval threw one inning in relief with two strikeouts.

Elgin (15-7 overall, 8-2 district record), under Head Coach Pete Moreno, hosted Cedar Creek High School to start the week and will be on the road Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. against Bastrop High School.
