SMITHVILLE – The Smithville High School varsity baseball team picked up its first two 4A-District 22 wins of the season this past week as the Tigers swept Giddings High School.

SMITHVILLE — The Smithville High School varsity baseball team picked up its first two 4A-District 22 wins of the season this past week as the Tigers swept Giddings High School.

SMITHVILLE TIGERS 9, GIDDINGS BUFFALOES 7

The Tigers were able to hold on April 1 during Smithville’s 9-7 win in eight innings on the road at Giddings to capture their first district victory. Smithville got out to a 5-0 lead but the Buffaloes rallied to tie this game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tigers plated four runs in the top of the eighth frame and held off another furious rally by Giddings in the bottom of the eighth.

Jacob Moore led the Tigers’ offense with two RBI, while Kyle Pietsch, Raando Arpero, Grayson Mullen, Trip Davis and Jaxson Frazier each drove in one run.

Arpero got the start on the mound for Smithville and pitched six innings with five strikeouts, just two walks issued and only one run allowed.

SMITHVILLE TIGERS 9, GIDDINGS BUFFALOES 4 Spearheaded by a sixrun third inning, Smithville cruised April 6 at home to a 9-4 triumph over the visiting Buffaloes.

The Tigers had two runs driven in apiece from Frankie Andrada, Mullen and Moore with Frazier driving in one run of his own.

Mullen got the win on the mound as he struck out five batters in 5.2 innings while allowing four runs, while Pietsch came in to pitch a scoreless 1.1 innings in relief.

Smithville (6-13-1 overall, 2-3 district record), under Head Coach Jason Peterson, continued district play Tuesday at Manor New Tech High School and the Tigers will have a rematch Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. hosting the Titans.
