Mustangs’ bite ends Wildcats’ run

BRENHAM — The Elgin Wildcats left it all on the field this past weekend as their playoff run came to an end in two games against the Magnolia West Mustangs.

On Thursday, May 9 In game one, Magnolia took an early lead 3-0 with a run in the second inning and two more runs in the third.

The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a single by Jack Grames, a single by Fernando Ramirez and a fielder’s choice by Tyson McFarlin.

Magnolia regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning and never looked back. The Mustangs added four more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win 8-3 over the Wildcats.

Grames, along with Jalen Owens, Alex Gamez, Nate Lewis and Ramirez each had one hit for the Wildcats.

Cason Nalle had a stolen base, while Ramirez and Grames each drove in a run for the Wildcats in the loss.

Game two

In game two on Friday, May 10, pitchers for both teams dueled until the end, but ultimately, Magnolia was able to pick up the win 2-0 over Elgin.

Owens started on the mound for the Wildcats and had three strikeouts. The only two runs of the game were in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Owens allowed only two hits and two runs over six innings, along with walking three batters. Lewis led Elgin with one hit in three at bats. Elgin was surehanded in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Tyson Mc-Farlin had the most chances in the field with six.

The Wildcats ended the season 17-18 overall, after going 10-4 and finishing second in district.

Elgin will lose five players to graduation, and will return eight, including a nucleus of Grames, McFarlin, Ramirez, Owens, Nalle and Bryce Barron.
