Swimmer’s body recovered in Colorado River

Second drowning this season for the area

BASTROP — The body of a late-night swimmer that went missing June 10 was found the following morning downstream in the Colorado River.

Bastrop County emergency response crews answered a distress call regarding a missing swimmer around 7:45 p.m. in the 400 block of East Riverside Drive, just south of the city.

Reports stated a man in his 30s went underwater by the Tahitian Village Boat Ramp and did not resurface.

Search teams employed boats, aerial drones and conducted shoreline searches to locate the missing individual, but the location’s limited visibility at night and river conditions made the task difficult, according to the Bastrop County Emergency Services District.

The scene was turned over to the Bastrop County Police Department June 11 when it became a recovery mission, reports said. Texas Parks and Wildlife and Lower Colorado River Authority crews aided on site and recovered the man’s body early in the morning, less than one mile downstream.

The man’s identity has not been released as the investigation continues.

Local swimmers described the popular swimming spot as “surprisingly dangerous,” often deeper than expected with slippery, moss-covered rocks and strong currents.

This is the second drowning to happen in the city this year. A man drowned March 24 after jumping into the water at Fisherman’s Park to aid his struggling son. The child survived.

Authorities urge water safety precautions when swimming in Bastrop County’s rivers and lakes during these hot summer months, suggesting life vests particularly when alcohol is involved.
