ORAL HISTORY PROJECT SHARES STORIES
ELGIN – Excerpts from stories about Elgin’s Southside will be shared June 21 by local actors, artists and students, 7 p.m. at The Open Room, 117 Central Ave. Interview subjects include Pete Bega, Delores Del Cantu, T. Berry, Shorty Russell, Ruby Simms and Shifton McShan – directed and editedbyMollyOwenand Karen Bernstein. Volunteers for the non-profit, community-based Elgin Oral History Project have conducted numerous interviews with people who live or have lived in Elgin.

MIDSUMMER FESTIVAL
ELGIN – The 77th annual Midsummer Festival and Swedish Reunion return to celebrate the region’s longstanding culture June 20 at the SPJST Hall, 702 State Highway 95. A social hour will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a chicken fried chicken dinner, recognitions, Swedish music, a live accordionist and traditional maypole dancing. A Swedish store and bakery will also be set up.

HOMECOMING PARADE
ELGIN – The Western Days Grand Parade kicks off June 22 at 10 a.m. with a tour down historic Main Street. Cash prizes for the spectacle of floats will be given to the best overall, most unique, most interactive and other entries. Food, music, competitions and vendors will follow at Elgin Memorial Park.

BIBLICAL CITIZENSHIP COURSE BASTROP – A biblical citizenship course will be held on Monday nights, 7 p.m. at Bastrop Bible Church, 602 Pecan St. The free 8 week course is developed by the Patriot Academy and focuses on the biblical principles in the founding of our nation and our responsibilities as citizens, as well as constitutional principles and how those are supported by biblical concepts.
