Education students compete nationally

Education students compete nationally

Four of Elgin Independent School District’s future educators returned from the nation’s capital this month with high honors.

Texas Association of Future Educators pupils Montserrat Fuentes-Carrillo, Keira Aldaco, Shelsy Garcia and Selene Plancarte-Borja attended the Educators Rising National Conference earlier this month to compete at the national level in Washington. Over 3,000 participants matched up in 25 competitions.

Fuentes-Carrillo claimed a third place ribbon for her entry in Teacher Created Materials, a created game called “Bon Voyage” that could be played when discussing the Mayflower Compact. She also participated in the Educators Rising National Signing event where she committed to Texas A&M Corpus Christi to major in Elementary Education.

Aldaco and Garcia entered the same competition with a race car themed game called “Add and SubTracks” to be used as a support for basic mathematic lessons.

Plancarte-Borja competed in Creative Lecture where she delivered a TED Talk presentation about teacher salaries and retention.

While in Washington, the students went on a private tour of the United States Capitol where they attended a gallery in session and listened to Representative Michael McCaul speak. They also visited the United States Department of Education, Library of Congress, United States Supreme Court, Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Smithsonian Natural History Museum, the White House and the Holocaust Museum.
