Athletes center stage for Meet the Wildcats

Fall sports in Elgin officially return this week with a special introduction for the district’s dedicated athletes.

Elgin Independent School District will host its Meet the Wildcats celebration Aug. 15 at Elgin High School’s main gymnasium.

The event will showcase students and coaches from the school’s football, volleyball, cross country, tennis, band, cheer and other teams. The booster club will have spirit gear, and kids will be able to get autographs from the athletes at the end of the event.

“A special thank you to the Elgin Chamber of Commerce for their support and partnership in this event and throughout the year,” an Elgin ISD Athletics release said.

The district will also honor its 2024 THSWPA State Championship powerlifting team during the celebration, with the Lady Wildcats receiving their championship rings.

Doors open at 6 p.m., with introductions beginning shortly after at 6:30 p.m.

This week, Elgin varsity football will begin practice in preparation for its first scrimmage, Aug. 22 at Lockhart High School. The Wildcats will open the 2024 regular season at home on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. against Buda Hays High School.

Lady Wildcats varsity volleyball, scheduled to start its season Aug. 13 at Bastrop High School, will compete in the Tex-Fest Tournament hosted by Wimberley High School Aug. 16-17, and will play another away match Aug. 20, 7:30 p.m., at Manor New Tech High School.

The Elgin cross country program will continue practicing, with its first meet of the season set for Aug. 16 at Wilco Park in Leander, where both the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats will compete.
