Strong showings for Smithville, Bastrop XC at invitational

TEMPLE – Smithville High School and Bastrop High School’s cross country teams had solid performances Aug. 16 at the Temple Invitational at Lions Park, with several runners finishing in strong positions in their respective divisions.

Smithville Tigers

In the 1A-4A varsity boys three-mile run, Smithville’s runners competed in a challenging field of 113 participants. Will Metcalf led the Tigers, placing 14th with a time of 17:04.6. Aidan Cox finished 56th with a time of 19:40.0, Elijah Romero came in 71st at 20:43.0, Cameron Morris placed 82nd with a time of 21:31.5 and Grayson Mullen rounded out the team in 84th place at 21:37.7.

Smithville Lady Tigers The Lady Tigers participated in the 1A-4A varsity girls two-mile run, which featured 98 runners. Emorie Jones delivered a standout performance, finishing 4th with a time of 13:58.3. Cassie Barina placed 28th at 15:31.2, Melany Villalobos came in 30th with a time of 15:37.5 and Elaynah Romero finished 44th at 16:15.4.

Bastrop Bears

In the large school 5A-6A boys three-mile run, Bastrop competed against 89 runners. Rey Ponce led the Bears with a strong 3rd place finish, clocking in at 16:24.2. Colin Emiliano took 27th place with a time of 18:13.4, Johan Torres came in 29th at 18:21.7, Asher Williams placed 51st with a time of 19:15.9 and Alan Almanza finished 60th at 20:02.2.

Bastrop Lady Bears

The Lady Bears competed in the large school 5A-6A girls three-mile run, which included 99 participants. Arrow Lingold led the team, placing 33rd with a time of 23:36.4, followed closely by Alondra Vasquez, who finished 34th with a time of 23:54.8. Lleradin Ponce came in 40th with a time of 24:10.1 and Sherlyn Arias placed 44th with a time of 24:19.2.

Both teams will compete next at the Westlake Invitational Aug. 23, at Southeast Metro Park in Del Valle.
