Smithville wildfire contained, burns 11 acres

SMITHVILLE – Local firefighters worked overnight last week to contain a wildfire that burned approximately 11 acres near Smithville.

The Pine Dump Fire ignited Aug. 22 at the Smithville Brush Dump near Farm to Market 2571 and Commanche Ridge, initially spreading across three acres, according to the Bastrop County Office of Emergency Management.

By that evening, the fire had expanded to 10 acres and was about 35% contained. Fire crews halted the forward progression of the blaze and no structures were threatened.

The Texas A&M Forest Service, Smithville Fire Department and The Heart of Pines Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire, working through the night to monitor and patrol the area.

Containment efforts saw significant progress the following day. By midday, containment had increased to 60%, and by the evening it had improved to 80%.

The fire was fully contained Aug. 24, aided by a half inch of rain. No residences or structures were damaged.

Local officials and fire crews have expressed gratitude for the support and efforts of everyone involved in managing the Pine Dump Fire.

To reduce the risk of wildfires, residents are urged to follow safety guidelines, including properly disposing of cigarettes, avoiding parking on dry grass and refraining from using lawnmowers in dry conditions. Firefighters also advise drivers to ensure there are no chains or metal parts dangling from their vehicles, as sparks can ignite roadside fires.

As of Aug. 26, Bastrop County is not under a burn ban, but the risk of wildfires remains a concern.
