BASTROP – Bastrop’s historical center and community hub buzzed with excitement last Saturday as it unveiled a new partnership with the city’s school district.
The collaboration between the Bastrop Museum & Visitor Center and the Bastrop Independent School District Partners in Education program will introduce educational programs and projects tailored specifically for BISD students.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the school year,” said Nancy Wood, events director for the Bastrop County Historical Society. “The energy, the community spirit, the new partnership and the recognition of our BISD heroes made this a day to remember.”
The announcement was made during the museum’s monthly Music in the Museum concert series, featuring a lively, family- friendly back-to-school rap jam headlined by local hip-hop artist Chubbz. The event honored BISD teachers, students and staff, celebrating their contributions to the community.
In addition, all BISD teachers will now receive half-price admission to the museum, further emphasizing the museum’s commitment to supporting local education.
'Being a Partner in Education with BISD is a natural match for the Bastrop Museum & Visitor Center. One of our primary goals is education for the community, and we feel that educational outreach to the schools is a perfect fit,' said Jill Barrow, society interim director.
Martha Huett, a retired BISD Spanish teacher and museum representative, emceed the event, acknowledging the educators, students and staff in attendance.
“It is a privilege to celebrate our teachers, students and staff who pour so much into our schools,” she said. “Education is the backbone of our community, and today we honor that.”
According to representatives, a standout moment occurred when Christopher Barrow, a new fifthgrade teacher at BISD, shared his experience meeting his students.
'These kids came up to me, looked me in the eye, gave me a firm handshake and introduced themselves,” Barrow said. 'You raise them right around here.'
Local barber and Chubby’s Barber Shop owner Chris Higgins, also known as Chubbz, delivered a performance that resonated with the audience, earning a standing ovation.
“The event was a true celebration of the community,” Higgins said.
Held in the Special Exhibition Room, which is currently featuring the “Inked in Skin” tattoo exhibit until October 26, the event provided a culturally rich and unique backdrop for the gathering.
