Narcotics investigation leads to murder charge

BASTROP – A 29-yearold woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a Bastrop County resident who died from a fentanyl overdose earlier this year, according to the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office.

In February, deputies responded to a call in northeast Bastrop where they discovered a 19-year-old woman unresponsive in her bed. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and a search of her room revealed a small amount of white powder, later identified as fentanyl.

Following the discovery, the BCSO Narcotics Unit launched an investigation into how the young woman had obtained the fentanyl.

Under Texas law, individuals who supply fentanyl to someone who dies as a result of its use can be charged with murder, according to the office.

After an autopsy conf irmed the cause of death as a fentanyl overdose, investigators learned the victim had traveled to the Austin area the night before her death to purchase the drug. Through their investigation, authorities identified the person who sold the fentanyl as Alba Karina Canales, 29, who has a history of drug use and trafficking, Sheriff Maurice Cook said.

A murder warrant was issued for Canales’ arrest, and she was apprehended in Williamson County, where she was found in possession of fentanyl and other illegal narcotics.

Canales is currently being held at the Bastrop County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the sheriff.
