The Elgin Garden Club has crowned the lawn of Maria Avila at 608 N. Avenue F as September’s Yard of the Month. The yard features two_7-foot-tall esperanza yellow bells surrounded by zinnias, striking blooms of magenta cock’s comb, lion’s mane, vinca and a wide variety of potted plants. The local gardeners meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Grace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 11th Street and U.S. 290, starting at 9:30 a.m. with a plant exchange._Visitors and new members are welcome.
