With clubs in hand and a cause in mind, local golfers came together Sept. 21 for the third annual Relay For Life Golf Tournament, raising a substantial $7,600 to fight cancer.
Money raised from the fundraiser at ColoVista Golf Club, which surpassed last year’s total of $5,300, will go towards benefitting the American Cancer Society.
Fifteen teams of four competed in the scram- ble-style tournament. The Covert Ford & Chevy of Hutto team, featuring Nate Morgan, Ryan Gills, Jake Ward and Carlos Tercero, took first place, followed by Tri-County Feed in second and “Five O’Clock Somewhere” in third.
The event of fered plenty of action off the greens too, with minigames like closest to the pin, longest drive and a hole-in-one challenge where par t ic ipant s could win a GMC vehicle courtesy of Covert Bastrop. Mark Prathers and Elliot Reyes won the closest-to-the-pin contests, while Carlos Terroro and Kelly Keoning claimed longest drive awards for men and women.
Alt hough no one nailed a hole-in-one, the competition was fierce.
A post-tournament raffle included a variety of prizes donated by local businesses and individuals, such as coolers, gift cards, lottery tickets, alcohol, a putter, a round of golf at Kissing Tree and several nights at a beach house.
Frontier Bank, one of the tournament ’s 18 sponsors, set up a tent and handed out branded hats, koozies and sunglasses, while Bluebonnet Electric donated water bottles to keep players hydrated. Lunch was provided by Don and Sylvia Hudson on behalf of Cattleman for Cancer Research.
Next year’s tournament is already set for Sept. 20, returning to the ColoVista Golf Club.
