A downtown Elgin house went up in flames on Friday, Feb. 3, and the structure is considered to be a complete loss.

The fire, which occurred at the corner of Main Street and Lexington Road, happened at approximately 5:40 a.m. and took about 45 minutes to get under control, according to Chief Marco Martinez of North Bastrop County Fire Rescue.

The house was vacant at the time of the incident. Therefore, Chief Martinez couldn’t definitively determine the cause of the fire. However, Martinez expressed confidence that the incident was weather-related.

“After further investigation, we just noticed there was a tree on top of a powerline in the rear of the structure,” Martinez said. “With nobody being home, we’re going to just say that it was probably due to the weather with the power.”

A total of four units were needed to extinguish the fire, Martinez said, three coming from North Bastrop County Fire Rescue and the other from Bastrop County Emergency Services District No. 2. The structure was defined as a total loss due to the extensive water and smoke damage.

No injuries were reported at the scene.
