City Council Sept. 17 unanimously approved a permit for Elgin Independent School District to convert a former First Baptist Church building into its new child development center.
The center, at 205 W. Second St., will serve full-time staff within the district, allowing them to enroll their children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. Operating hours will be Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., licensed for up to 90 students and 22 employees.
“We know that a young child develops best in a nurturing and stimulating program that actively involves you, the parent, and as a working parent, you need the assurance that your child is well cared for,” a mission statement said. “The Child Development Center staff knows that a child needs a place where he or she receives individual attention, is encouraged to be creative and expressive, is led to new discoveries about his or her world and can enjoy quiet nurturing moments.”
A traffic report confirmed that minimum parking requirements are satisfied, ensuring smooth access for families and minimal roadway disruption for residents.
Currently, the district operates its facility in portable buildings behind the Elgin ISD administrative office. The new site is seen as a more suitable permanent solution to meet their needs, according to a district representative.
The council agreed to omit a five year permit renewal stipulation initially included in the ordinance.
