The togetherness of Elgin was on full display this past Saturday, Feb. 4, as the community dealt with challenges stemming from last week’s winter storm.
Elgin Independent School District handed out 362 free curbside lunches to its students and families at Elgin High School throughout the afternoon. As long as students provided their name, address and campus, they received a meal as promised.
“When faced with challenges, Elgin ISD and the Elgin community will always work together to assist with the needs of our students and families,” said district spokesperson Marcial Guajardo, “always remembering that we are ‘One Town, One Team, One Family.’”
Among those facilitating the event were district superintendent Dr. Jana Rueter, Board of Trustees member Valarie Neidig, the Child Nutrition department, various administrators and teachers. A number of student-athletes helped out as well.
According to Guajardo, district leaders took notice of damages and power outages throughout the week and saw an opportunity to provide some “neighborly assistance.”
Elgin ISD will continue to aid students and the community as they recover from the winter storm’s aftermath.
“We will continue to monitor the needs of our students and families as we move forward after this winter storm,” said Guajardo. “We will provide updates as we make progress in getting our campuses back to safe and operable conditions.”
