Atlas Construction received approval from City Council last week to finish Phase IV of the Roy Rivers Drive project for a water and wastewater utility loop out to U.S. 290.
“We thought previously we’d build utilities out in the business park as projects came along, but this is more or less the last leg to get us back up to U.S. 290, so the (Economic Development Corp.) has decided we might as well build this now instead of waiting for another project to come in,” City Manager Thomas Mattis told council members. “This will put us in the position to have shovel- ready sites in the business park.”
Atlas Construction, based out of Granite Shoals, gave the lowest bid by about $170, officials said. TRC Companies officials who evaluated the bidders reported Atlas Construction had successfully completed previous similar projects and recommended the company.
Earl ier thi s year, the city and the EDC gave their support to a planned development district known as the Rhodes Tract with retail development and commercial projects.
The construction award will allow the city to move forward with the utility infrastructure needed to serve the development, officials said.
The utilities currently run to a cul-de-sac where the roadway ends by the business park.
The construction will extend the utilities from Roy Rivers to the southern property line of the Rhodes Tract, where most commercial sites are found, planners said.
The result will be a loop system providing city water and sewage services to the industrial park and the commercial parcels.
The work consists of about 1,800 linear feet of water line and about 900 linear feet of wastewater line, officials said.
Eight bids were received from contractors, ranging from $393,107.59 to $484,943.
The construction is being funded by the EDC, officials said.
