Elgin’s varsity basketball boys defeated the Waco Lions 48-42 Friday, Nov. 15, improving to 2-1 on the season.
The Wildcats’ defensive efforts have shown promise, allowing under 50 points per game in this first stretch of the season, and will remain important as the team develops, according to Head Coach Dave Wilson.
“I’ve been happy with our defense. We still have a lot of room for improvement, especially with the players who are new to the varsity level,” Wilson said. “Our defense is ahead of our offense, and it has either kept us in games or allowed us to win.”
On the offensive side, Elgin struggled with shooting, a recurring issue this year that needs improvement, the coach added.
“We have to get better at moving the ball and not letting it stick,” Wilson said. “We also need to execute more effectively with some of the offensive sets we run. Ultimately, a big part of it is just knocking down shots from the outside.”
The Wildcats will have a chance to improve their shooting when they go on the road against LBJ Austin Nov. 19, before traveling to Temple Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m.
