The Wildcats returned from San Antonio Nov. 15 as record setters, after the varsity football team secured its first playoff win in 10 years, defeating the Jefferson Mustangs 43-16.

Sophomore quarterback Dylan Owens played a pivotal role in the historic victory, accounting for 210 total yards and two touchdowns.

Despite a slow start, with Jefferson taking a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, Elgin found its rhythm in the second. The Wildcats scored 24 unanswered points to take a 24-10 lead into halftime.

This momentum carried into the second half as Elgin's defense stepped up, limiting Jefferson to no points in the third quarter while the Wildcats added two more touchdowns for a 36-10 lead.

Junior defensive back Xavier Penson and senior linebacker Doddyn Bailey anchored the defense, combining for 30 total tackles.

Elgin extended its lead to 43-10 before Jefferson scored a late touchdown to narrow the margin. Senior all-purpose player Jalen Owens made a major impact, totaling 162 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Gary Jefferson contributed 62 yards and two scores.

The Wildcats will aim to build on this milestone victory heading into their next game, facing the Richmond Randle Lions Friday, Nov. 22, following a 66-7 victory over Belton. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Merrill Green Stadium, 3450 Campus Drive in Bryan.
