Elgin High School athletes, performers and students gained access to the tallest building in the district last week — their new state-ofthe- art Multi-Purpose Facility.
Approved as part of the 2021 Elgin Independent School District bond package, the 56,865-square-foot facility features dressing and storage areas, a weight room, training room and offices, as well as an indoor, air-conditioned practice field with artificial turf and a shortened football field.
The updated weight room can accommodate up to 59 students, more than doubling the capacity of the high school’s previous weight room.
The facility officially opened Dec. 12, standing 58 feet tall, and is designed to serve a variety of programs, including marching bands, dance squads and sports teams, according to district representatives. Partitions will allow multiple groups to utilize the space simultaneously.
Superintendent of Schools Jana Rueter and School Board President Beth Walterscheidt addressed a small crowd during the grand opening ceremony, celebrating the district’s efforts to provide modern resources for its expanding enrollment.
