A split tournament weekend showed that the Lady Wildcats have some fight left in them, but a loss to Pflugerville Connally Jan. 3 has kept them winless in district play.

The Elgin girls varsity basketball team went 2-2 in the Mumford Tournament late last month before falling to the Cougars 55-41 last Friday. The team sits at 6-21 overall, 0-5 in district.

Two close losses set the stage for what would be a hard-fought tournament. Elgin came up short 33-30 to St. Joseph Catholic High School and suffered a narrow 42-41 defeat to Granger after rallying from a 28-14 halftime deficit.

Improving off of the hits, the Lady Wildcats bounced back on the second day with a pair of wins, defeating Buffalo, 45-30, and Milano, 60-23.

Elgin found some offensive rhythm in their wins, cruising to double- digit victories. Junior guards Trinity Martinez and Sharmonique Williams were standout performers for Elgin during the extended play.

The team’s stride faltered when faced up against Pflugerville Connally, though.

Despite overcoming a five-point deficit with a 9-0 run, fueled by a three-pointer and layup from Martinez, the Cougars closed the first quarter at a 10-9 advantage.

Elgin reclaimed the lead in the second quarter when senior forward Sabra Baker hit a threepointer, but it would be the Wildcats’ final advantage of the night. Pf lugerville Connally answered with a 15-0 run, extending their lead to 28-14 in the third quarter.

The girls were able to cut the deficit to 10 points at 36-26, but the Cougars ultimately pulled away to secure the win.

Martinez led all scorers with 16 points, while Baker contributed nine.

The Wildcats will host East View before traveling to Hendrickson for a matchup Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m.
