A vision of what 2023 will look like at Elgin schools is in motion.

Final designs were approved Nov. 28 for the transportation and multi-purpose facilities at Elgin Independent School District. The school board unanimously voted in favor of the designs minus Trustee Pete Bega being absent.

The buildings were among projects in the 2021 district bond package. Two out of three propositions passed and also effectively approved two elementary schools, expansion and upgrades at Elgin High School, the addition of an auditorium at EHS, career and technical education facility improvements and district-wide renovations. The third prop would have funded a new scoreboard and an expanded press box for Wildcat Stadium.

Transportation Center

Design plans for the transportation center include additional capacity for bus parking, on-site fueling, restroom facilities and an alternate bid for meeting and training space. The building will be built on the west side of high school property and accessed through a newly acquired tract to the south along FM 1100.

Construction expected to begin in April and should be completed by the end of the year. Costsare estimated at $6.7 million for the base bid, plus approximately $456,300 for the alternate bid.

Multi-Purpose Facility

EHS’ campus will have the $9.9 million Multi-Purpose Facility south of Wildcat Stadium.

Designs for the 56,865 square-foot facility call for a 70-yard indoor practice field with artificial turf, restrooms, storage, training and weight rooms, and offices. The field will be marked for football and other sports can also be used for community and fine arts purposes.

Construction is scheduled in April and is expected to take one year to complete.

“That multi-purpose facility is going to be not just for athletics. It’s going to be all programs and community use as well. It’s going to be beautiful. We’re also going to have some weight room there and a training room there,” said Superintendent Jana Reuter in a recent address to the district. “We just really looked up the needs of these facilities and what we have. It’s going to be a phenomenal opportunity.”
