BRENHAM — A last-minute goal dashed the Bastrop Bears varsity soccer team’s hopes for a deeper playoff run March 28, as Lake Creek claimed a 3-2 victory in the third round.
The Lions found the game-winner with just 30 seconds remaining, sending Bastrop home after a hard-fought match.
The Bears, closing out the season 16-2-6, jumped ahead 1-0 in the first half, only for Lake Creek to respond swiftly with a penalty kick two minutes later.
Another Lions goal in the final minutes of the half put Bastrop behind 2-1 at the break, despite attempts on target that could have pulled the Bears level.
Early in the second half, Bastrop tied the match at 2-2, setting the stage for a tense defensive lock down the stretch.
Lake Creek finally broke through off of a corner kick in the closing moments on the pitch.
Sophomore Avery Chavez Hernandez and freshman Isaac Velazquez each scored for Bastrop, both with multiple late chances that were thwarted by the Lions’ goalkeeper.
Although the season has come to a close for Bastrop, this year’s campaign will be one to remember, coaching staff said—with a second-place finish in district, a 6-1-4 record, and the program’s first postseason appearance and playoff win in six years, the roster’s achievements will solidify their place in team history.
