A determined comeback lifted the Smithville Lady Tigers varsity softball team to a 6-4 triumph over the Caldwell Hornets Saturday, March 29.

Smithville clawed back from a 4-1 deficit in the opening inning, improving its record to 17-5-1 overall and 4-1 in district play.

After freshman Jessica Hinnant’s RBI single put the Lady Tigers up 1-0 in the top of the first, Caldwell promptly scored four runs in the bottom half, fueled by an error, a groundout and a two-run homer.

Unfazed, Hinnant settled down in the circle and recorded nine strikeouts while silencing the Hornets for the remainder of the game.

Smithville inched closer in the second inning, trimming the deficit to 4-2 with another RBI single by Hinnant.

A sacrifice fly brought the Lady Tigers within one in the third, and they grabbed the lead for good in the fourth on junior Kenna Tiner’s two-run single.

An RBI single by Brityn Roberts in the fifth provided the final margin, sealing a 6-4 victory.

The Lady Tigers closed their series with Caldwell after press time Tuesday, April 1, and will head to Navasota Friday, April 4, for a 6 p.m. district matchup.
