A quiet offense and costly errors plagued the Lady Wildcats varsity softball team in an 11-3 defeat to Marble Falls Tuesday, March 25.

Elgin mustered only four hits across 27 at-bats, dropping to 8-13 overall and 3-3 in district play with the loss.

The girls blanked Marble Falls for two innings, then took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a defensive miscue—until a missed fly ball allowed the Mustangs to tie it up at 1-1 in the top of the third.

Marble Falls claimed a 2-1 edge moments later, capitalizing on a throwing error in the fourth and pushing the margin to 5-1 after a three-run frame fueled by another error, an RBI single and a fielder’s choice.

Elgin went 11 consecutive batters without reaching base, opening the door for Marble Falls to add three runs in the sixth. The Lady Wildcats finally ended the drought with a single in the bottom half but could not convert with runners in scoring position.

Marble Falls pulled out of reach in the top of the seventh, tacking on three more runs off a pair of walks, a fielder’s choice, a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.

Elgin showed some spark in the final frame, plating two runs on sophomore Miranda Herring’s RBI triple and junior Bianca Galindo’s RBI groundout.

Senior pitcher Gabriella Sandoval took the loss, pitching six innings while yielding eight runs and striking out 11, while junior Adriana Sandoval worked one inning in relief and allowed three runs.

After facing Hendrickson and Weiss past time of press, the Lady Wildcats will travel to Georgetown for a district matchup Friday, April 4, at 7 p.m.
