SMITHVILLE — Bastrop County parks and public spaces got a fresh coat of care last week as Lower Colorado River Authority employees joined volunteers across Texas for the organization’s annual Steps Forward Day of service.
Locally, LCRA teams tackled multiple projects, including painting restrooms at Riverbend Park in Smithville, freshening up parking lot wheel stops, fire lanes and fences at the Smithville Recreation Center.
“We started Steps Forward Day 10 years ago as a way to give back to Texas communities,” said Phil Wilson, LCRA general manager. “Today, that journey continues stronger than ever. This year, more than 700 employees volunteered to work on projects communities may not have the time or resources to complete on their own.”
Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative employees joined LCRA volunteers for two of the projects.
Earlier in the week, LCRA crews painted pavilion supports and installed new trash cans at Bob Bryant Park in Bastrop, part of the ongoing Steps Forward Day efforts.
The projects were among 40 completed across 35 Texas communities.
“It’s all about making a difference in the communities we serve and supporting our fellow Texans,” Wilson said. “This is community service in action.”
LCRA, established by the Texas Legislature in 1934, manages the lower Colorado River, provides clean and reliable water supplies and generates and transmits electric power across the region. The organization also maintains more than 40 parks from the Hill Country to the Gulf Coast, all without state appropriations.
Steps Forward is one of several initiatives aimed at supporting the communities LCRA serves.
