The Elgin Wildcats varsity baseball team celebrated senior night defeating the Glenn Grizzlies 7-1 Saturday, April 12, behind a dominant outing from sophomore Trey Flores and senior Malakia Hicks. The duo combined to allow just one run on three hits while striking out nine.

Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings before Glenn broke through with an RBI single in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Elgin quickly responded with four runs in the bottom half after loading the bases with two outs on a walk and back-to-back singles from seniors Jalen Owens and Hibbs.

The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead on a walk and a hit-by-pitch before capitalizing on an error and a run-scoring single by junior Jesse Guerrero to extend the lead to 4-1.

Glenn threatened in the fourth, putting two runners on with two outs, but a pop-up snagged by Owens ended the inning.

Elgin added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Fernando Ramirez ripped an RBI double to make it 5-1, followed by an RBI single from Owens and another run-scoring single from Hibbs to push the lead to 7-1.

The Wildcats closed strong, retiring nine of the final 10 batters to seal the win.

Elgin improved to 12-9-1 overall and 6-4 in district play, holding on to the fourth playoff spot and sitting two games ahead of Weiss. The Wildcats will wrap up the regular season with a home-andhome series against East View, starting Tuesday, April 15, before hosting the Patriots on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m.
