The Elgin Lady Wildcats softball team picked up two key district victories this past week, defeating Pflugerville 13-1 Tuesday, April 8, and outlasting Pflugerville Connally 15-10 Friday, April 11.
vs. Pflugerville
Elgin got a five-inning run-rule victory on senior night as it opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Pflugerville briefly tied the game with an RBI double, but the Lady Wildcats responded with two runs on fielder’s choices in the second to regain a 3-1 advantage.
The offense exploded in the fourth inning with a 10-run outburst. Elgin recorded five consecutive singles, driving in four runs to stretch the lead to 7-1.
Sophomore Grace Hegan then delivered a bases-clearing triple, and an RBI single from junior Bianca Galindo made it 11-1. The Wildcats capped the inning by scoring on an error and a groundout to make it 13-1.
Senior Gabriella Sandoval earned the win, pitching four innings and allowing just one run while striking out five. Hegan and senior Jaelyn Barker led the offense with three RBIs each. Elgin secured the run-rule victory in the fifth.
vs. Pflugerville Connally
The Lady Wildcats prevailed in a high-scoring battle with Connally as both teams combined for 25 runs on 26 hits.
Elgin capitalized on multiple fielding errors in the top of the first to jump out to a 4-0 lead, scoring three runs on miscues and a sacrifice fly by Sarah Herring. Connally answered with a run on a groundout in the bottom half.
