An effectively new Bastrop County town could be home for workers of Elon Musk.
According to the Wall Street Journal, recent land purchases by Musk-owned companies have included acres destined for new home construction for his workers. The city would be called Snailbrook, which Musk reportedly described as a “sort of Texas utopia along the Colorado River.” WSJ also linked legal documents in their report.
The town would be named after the mascot for The Boring Company, a tunnel construction company founded by Musk, which owns property just off of FM 1209. On Aug. 31, a $43 million project at 816 FM 1209 in Bastrop was the subject of a state filing from an owner addressed at the SpaceX Rocket Development Facility in McGregor. The filing calls for a 521,521 square-foot shell building codenamed Project Echo.
The project was filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation with architectural barrier details. Deven Dreyer was named as the owner, but his address listed is the McGregor facility.
The TDLR paperwork came after SpaceX’s water quality construction permit for property at the same address, located near a tributary to the Colorado River. The permit was submitted and approved June 6.
SpaceX is a private spaceflight company founded by Musk. Company rockets have sent satellites and people to space. NASA works with the organization to get astronauts to the International Space Station.
County commissioners approved a $30,000 donation from The Boring Company for Walker Watson Road during the Nov. 28 commissioners court meeting. The Boring Company has property at 130 Walker Watson Road, near where SpaceX-connected property intersects.
This is a developing story. More information will be in the March 15 edition of the Elgin Courier.
