HALLETTSVILLE – The Smithville Tigers varsity baseball team moved to 1-4 in on the season after falling in back-to-back games of a doubleheader against the Sacred Heart Indians Friday, March 17, at Sacred Heart’s home field.
The Tiger lost 12-2 to cap off the double header, and now shift their focus to making improvements.
Sacred Heart sits at 20-2, and the Tigers were giving them a game after losing 10-0 in the first matchup up. The first inning started with the Tigers scoring two runs to start the game.
Sacred Heart showed their experience and would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Sacred Heart continued to pour on the runs as they scored four in the second and third inning each.
With a 10-2 lead, Sacred Heart looked to put the game away in the fourth, and they did just that as they scored two more runs to meet the requirements for the mercy rule.
The Tiger’s showed a lot of heart and fight as they were creating opportunities to get themselves back into the game. A couple of bad bounces and lock down defense from Sacred Heart stopped any chances they had.
The Tigers were only able to score two runs in the first before the game was called. Sacred Heart’s defense kept Smithville’s offense in check throughout the game too, as any rally the Tigers tried to start was halted in its tracks.
With the loss now behind them and district play on the horizon, the Tigers know where they are lacking. With Giddings first up on their district schedule, Smithville may have already begun making the adjustments and improvements necessary to make a successful district run.
The Tigers have a nice little break before starting district play Tuesday, April 4 at home, and looking to show people the back-to-back losses to Sacred Heart is not who they are as a team.
