Police investigate shooting on MLK

Police are investigating a late night shooting north of the US 290 and Texas 95 intersection.

At 11:26 p.m. Monday, March 27, the Elgin Police Department responded to a call for shots fired in the 800 block of South Martin Luther King Boulevard. The road was shut down, and residents were ordered to shelter in place.

Suspects were unknown at first before EPD put out a description to the public.

“Officers are searching for a black male suspect, thin build, with ‘blue dread locks,’” said police staff in a statement. “We (did) have air support and K9 assets on scene.”

As Monday turned into Tuesday, March 28, police suspended its search for the suspect as of 1:02 a.m.

“At this time, it is believed this is an isolated incident,” said EPD in an update, “and there is no ongoing threat to the public.”

The scene was cleared by 7:07 a.m., and the road has reopened.

At press time, there was no information on injuries.

UPDATE: Terrence Wayne Lewis, 35, has named the primary suspect in relation to the deaths of Crystal D. Fitzgerald, 43, and Reggie W. Smith, 45. For our full story, click here
