The Elgin Wildcats varsity baseball team took on the Pflugerville Connally Cougars in a two-game series last week Tuesday, March 21 and Friday, March 24, to pick up back-to-back district wins.
The two teams split the opportunity to have home field advantage, with the Cougars having the honors during the first matchup.
The Wildcats were not intimidated by the Cougars home crowd as they came out ready to handle business. Starting the game on offense, the Wildcats knew they needed a strong start to get some momentum going and get the crowd out of the game.
Succeeding in their goal, the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and kept their foot on the gas from there. Defensively, the Wildcats played a pretty much perfect game as they shut the Cougars out on their home field.
The offense would score seven runs in total in game one to take a 1-0 series lead with a 7-0 win. With game two coming up Friday on the Wildcats' home field, they wanted to replicate that dominant win with another one in front of their home fans.
The Wildcats were in fact able to carry the momentum over as their fans' cheers grew louder and louder with every big play they made. The Cougars gave some push back to the Wildcats stonewall defense, as they were able to put three runs up on the board.
The scores from the Cougars put pressure on the Wildcats, but unfortunately for the Cougars, it was short-lived. The Wildcats would not be denied offensively in game two of the two-game series, as they were able to recapture the magic, they had in game one.
Elgin scored almost double the amount of runs in game two that they scored in game one putting 13 runs on the board. With the game securely in hand, the Wildcats’ defense again took over and shut down the Cougars to capture their second district win.
The Wildcats will enjoy these two wins quickly had to set their sights on Bastrop for another two game series Tuesday, April 11 and Friday, April 14 as they look to climb up the district rankings.
