The Elgin Lady Wildcats took on the Pflugerville Panthers Friday, March 24, and picked up their fifth district win of the season.

The Lady Cats would walk away with a 3-1 win over the Panthers, but things seemed uncertain until the fifth inning.

Playing on their home field, the Lady Cat defense took the field first and wanted to set the tone for their team for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, the Panthers' offense had other plans and got their offense going early and opened the scoring in the first inning.

Down 1-0, the Lady Cats were calm, cool and collected as they went up to bat in a attempt to tie the game. The Panthers defense stood tall and held them scoreless heading into the second.

The Lady Cats’ defense would bounce back, holding the Panthers' offense scoreless and keeping themselves in the game. The defensive battle continued throughout the game making fans feel a little uneasy as the seventh and final inning drew closer.

With their team down on the scoreboard, something needed to happen for the Lady Cat offense, and it needed to happen fast. In the fourth inning, the Lady Cats were again held scoreless and as fans did everything, they could try to will their team to get on the scoreboard, they were still down 1-0 and heading back on defense.

The Lady Cats defense came back on the field sporting that calm, cool and collected attitude, and again kept themselves in the game by securing three quick outs. Now back on offense, there was a buzz in the Lady Cats dugout and in the crowd, as well, with the rally starting to form.

The Lady Cats scored three runs in the fifth inning, sparking a huge reaction from the crowd and their coaches. The biggest play of the fifth came when junior Jaylan Roberson stepped into the batter's box with a runner on base.

Roberson would wait for the right pitch, then as she made contact, she watched as it soared over the fence for a two-run home run to give her team the lead. With a 3-1 lead, the Lady Cats continued their defensive dominance to close out the game and come away with the win.

The late rally gave them a big spark in momentum as the Lady Cats continue to climb the district rankings with their next matchup against Hendrickson (Pflugerville) Tuesday, March 28.
