High school students and parents will have different road paths for the rest of the school year.
Construction on Elgin High School bond projects began affecting traffic flow Tuesday, March 28. The impact is expected to last through late 2024
Student parking will be diverted northwest near the campus baseball and softball fields. Parking in the northeast lot, normally for students, will be for parent drop-off lanes and construction areas only. Construction areas will be fenced off for safety.
The bond projects affecting traffic were part of the $182.76 million in costs approved by Elgin residents in the bond election last November and the 2021 district bond improvement plan. Planned EHS upgrades include a new auditorium, multi-purpose facility, two-story classroom addition, cafeteria expansion, career and technical education wing expansion and additional parking.
“We have our transportation center. That is going to be built just beyond the site of the existing high school,” said Superintendent Jana Reuter in an update last year describing some of the upgrades. “A multi-purpose facility, which we know is where the practice field is right now for Elgin High School, and that multi-purpose facility is going to be not just for athletics. It’s going to be all programs and community use as well. It’s going to be beautiful. We’re also going to have some weight room there and a training room there.”
