Get rid of hazardous waste

SMITHVILLE — Two counties are teaming up to allow residents to get rid of items that shouldn't be kept around the house for too long.

The Bastrop and Lee County Clean-Up will be April 15 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bastrop County Household Hazardous Waste & Reuse Facility, 109 Taylor St. in Smithville. The event is open to all residents of Bastrop County, including Bastrop and Smithville.

Vouchers are required for collection events such as this one. Addresses must be verified with a utility bill or drivers license. Vouchers available at the Bastrop County Development Services office, 211 Jackson St. in Bastrop, and Smithville City Hall, 317 Main St. in Smithville.

Accepted items include:

• general household – Batteries, degreasers, drain cleaners, oven cleaning solvents, polishers, pool chemicals, and household cleaning products that are clearly marked and not leaking;

• paint products – aerosol paint cans, paints latex and oil based, preservatives varnish and poly, strippers and thinners, and stains; and

• miscellaneous – vehicle batteries, herbicides and pesticides, pet products, and other types of aerosol cans.

Commercial waste or any item deemed unsafe or unidentifiable by staff will not be accepted.
