Cantrell throws shutout for 7th district win

GEORGETOWN – The Elgin Lady Wildcats took on the East View Patriots Friday, March 31, and Elgin’s pitcher had a phenomenal game.

Jessica Cantrell pitched a shutout against the Patriots to give her team a 3-0 victory, which is their seventh district win.

Cantrell ended the game only allowing two hits and one walk, but her performance got more impressive. Cantrell would strike out 14 batters and was able to pitch the entire game for her team.

The Lady Wildcats started the game on offense, as they were the visiting team, and they led off with a double from Jaylan Roberson. Bianca Galindo would then lay down a bunt to put the ball in play.

Galindo reached first base after an error by the Patriots first basemen, which also allowed Roberson to score from second base. Now, with a 1-0 lead early in the game, the Patriots knew they needed to make a defensive stand and get on offense to start build momentum.

The Lady Wildcats did not allow the Patriots to get going on offense and shut them down in a hurry before resuming their offensive attack. The Patriots walked the Lady Wildcats batter Camryn Davis and Nadia Sagastume came in to pinch-run.

The Patriots would grab two outs after the walk, but two wild pitches later, Sagastume would end up on third base and set her sights on home plate. Galindo then stepped back in the box and instead of laying down and bunting, she rocketed the ball into left field for a double, which scores Sagastume.

Shortly after, the Patriots would get the third out of the inning and the defensive warfare began. The two teams would have minimal offense through the third and fifth innings with both defenses not giving an inch.

Cantrell began to rack up strikeouts at this time, ringing up six batters in three innings. The Lady Wildcats second run mirrored the second run, as Davis was hit by a pitch to get on base then Sagastume would pinch run.

This time, Roberson would take advantage of an error and get a double off of an infield ground ball and put Sagastume on third. Galindo then hit a ground ball to the shortstop for an easy out at first base, but not before Sagastume reached home plate.

Now with a three-run lead in the sixth, the Lady Wildcats again shifted their focus to defense. Cantrell continued to dominate, picking up three more strikeouts in the last two innings.

After securing the win, the Lady Wildcats celebrated the pitcher's accomplishment and then quickly shifted focus to their next district game.

Looking to improve to 8-1 the Lady Wildcats looked to their game Tuesday, April 4, against Pflugerville Connally on their home field.
