Two people died in a shooting late last Tuesday that led to an arrest later in the week.
Terrence Wayne Lewis, 35, was caught in Austin Friday, March 31, in connection with the deaths of Crystal D. Fitzgerald, 43, and Reggie W. Smith, 45. He was booked into the Bastrop County Jail for two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.
In the late evening hours of March 27, officers were dispatched for shots fired in the 800 block of South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, north of the intersection of U.S. 290 and Texas 95. Police found a woman and a man with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Residents were ordered to shelter in place by officers, who also shut down South MLK Jr. Boulevard as the investigation began.
"First responders attempted lifesaving measures on both victims," said Elgin Police Department in a press release. "Due to the extent of the injuries, they were pronounced deceased at the scene."
Suspects were unknown at first before EPD put out a description to the public. Air support and K9 units joined in the search.
As Monday turned into Tuesday, March 28, police suspended their hunt as of 1:02 a.m. The scene was cleared by 7:07 a.m., and the road reopened. Assisting EPD were the Bastrop and Travis county sheriff's offices, the Manor Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Lee County Sheriff's Office and Austin Police Department's air unit.
“The Elgin Police Department requested assistance from the (U.S. Marshal's) Lone Star Fugitive Task Force to locate and apprehend Lewis,” said EPD's criminal investigations division, “who was known to be in the Austin area.”
On Friday, Lewis was found in the 6100 block of Fairway Street in southeast Austin. Around noon, Lewis was taken into custody by the task force and brought back to Elgin.
The investigation is ongoing. To report information related to the case, call or text Sgt. Nichole Brimhall at 512-801-5750, or email her at [email protected].
