Bears crawl pass Cougars

PFLUGERVILLE – In a pivotal district matchup, the Bastrop Bears held on after a late game surge to pick up a win over the Pflugerville Connally Cougars.

Last Tuesday, April 4, the Bears’ offense would rally in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to give themselves a 6-1 lead over the Cougars.

The first three innings of the game saw both teams showcase their defense and pitching skills leaving the game scoreless heading into the fourth inning. The Bears scored first in the fourth inning thanks to a double then a triple followed by another double.

The three big hits gave the Bears a 2-0 lead before the Cougars secured three outs to end the inning. Back on offense, the Cougars needed to get something going offensively, and with the bases loaded the Bears walked a batter, allowing the Cougars to score a run.

Bastrop shut down the field for the rest of the game, allowing their offense to continue to build momentum. The Bears would add two more runs thanks again to another big hit, which resulted in a double.

The Cougars dugout was beginning to buzz as they went back on offense, looking to get back in the game down 4-1. The Bears’ defense was locked in and on a mission. After two strikeouts and a fly out, the Bears were back on offense and completely sucked the wind out of the Cougars offensive sails.

The Bears added two more runs in the sixth inning to make the game 6-1 before letting their defense close out the game. The defense done exactly that to give the Bears a much-neededdistrict win.

The Bears’ defense was led by exceptional pitching that saw 13 strikeouts, six walks and only one error. Connally batters struggled to hit all night long, and whenever they did it was an easy out for the Bears defense.

The Bears switched their focus to Elgin, who they hosted Tuesday, April 11.
