GEORGETOWN – Bastrop High School sophomore Carly Sherman advanced to the State championship tournament that was held Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16 at White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown.
Sherman dominated the regional match to advance to the state championship and she did it in style.
Sherman sank a birdie putt from about 15 feet to cap off a great second round at the regional match. Sherman finished the second round shooting a 71.
Sherman started the regional match with by shooting a 79, but it is usually the case in golf for the first round because players are getting a feel for the course. In the second round, she came into it with a better understanding of how the course goes.
She was able to drive the ball, hit her irons and work her wedges better and it paid off. To drop eight shots from one round to the next is an extremely tough task to complete, but Sherman did it.
The first round was still a great round for Sherman, but the fact that she dropped eight shots her second time through shows that she was playing to understand the course, then when it came time to cap off a great round on the 18th, hole she delivered.
One of the biggest assets Sherman has in her bag is her short game and her ability to dominate the greens. On the 18th hole, she read the green beautifully and with one fluid motion she sunk the putt.
Heading into the state meet, Sherman looked to have a repeat performance to bring home another trophy. She played two rounds again, and was expected to have scores somewhat close to what she shot at the regional meet.
