Mary Lopez Acosta

Mary Lopez Acosta, affectionately known to many as “Memaw,” went home to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, at the age of 84. She was born Aug. 6, 1939, to Lonnie Sr. and Theresa (Figueroa) Lopez. Born in Burton, Mary spent her early years in the Brenham area and became a long-time resident of Elgin beginning in her teens.

She married Carlos “Pepaw” Acosta on May 20, 1978, in Elgin. They were married for 45 years.

Memaw was well known for her home cooking and made the best homemade tortillas.

She loved tending to her plants and her flowers, and her yard was once named “Yard of the Month.”

She was an avid gambler and spent many years traveling to Vegas with her late sister Martha. She also could tear up a dance floor, and frequently had Pepaw taking her out to all the dances around town. Memaw’s whole life revolved around her family. She spent many of her early years helping her son, Joe, practice baseball and later, traveling to band concerts, football games, school activities or stock shows with her granddaughters.

The most important quality Mary wanted to be remembered by was her unwavering faith. She was a devout Catholic who donated much of her time to helping her church family at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elgin. Memaw and Pepaw also traveled as often as possible to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle in San Juan.

She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brothers, Charlie and Joe Lopez; and sisters, Martha Perez and Luz Lopez.

Mary is survived by her husband, Carlos “Pepaw” Acosta; her only child, Joe Lopez of Elgin; three granddaughters, Kristie Ramirez and husband, Alec of League City, Caitlyn Lopez of Elgin and Mia Lopez and partner Holden Suarez of Cedar Creek; great-grandson, Dax Ramirez; and great-granddaughter Wrenley Ann Suarez, due January 2024; along with her brothers, sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 20, beginning at 6 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church located at 302 W. 11th St. in Elgin, with Father Paul Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at Elgin Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Basilica of Our Lady San Juan Del Valle in San Juan, Texas in memory of Mary Acosta.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Providence Funeral Home in Elgin, Texas located at 604 N. Highway 95 in Elgin, Texas.

Arrangements entrusted to Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home.
