Mary Gregg Hendricks Christensen
She moved with her family to Elgin in 1942. She joined the First United Methodist Church in 1948, and graduated from Elgin High School in 1950.
She married Jimmie Lee Christensen in 1951, and to this union was born Paul Henry Christensen in 1956 and Lou Dove Christensen Wirht in 1957.
Mary Gregg was employed at the Texas Department of Safety for six years prior to the birth of her children. She was a stay-at-home mother until 1967, when she began work for Elgin Independent School District. After the children were in college, she began work as accounts receivable for Austin Orthopedic Clinic until her retirement in 1996.
After retirement she volunteered in medical service, by taking friends to doctor appointments and kidney dialysis treatments. Prior to electronic filing of insurance claims, as a courtesy she filed medicare and other insurance claims for many elderly friends.
She enjoyed needle work and contributed many items to non-profit auctions in the Elgin area, and was known for making many ornate Christmas stockings as gifts for family and friends. She always enjoyed playing Bunco with her friends.
Mary Gregg and Jimmie Lee delivered Meals on Wheels for 20 plus years.
She was an active member of Elgin First United Methodist Church since 1948, faithfully serving the organizations of the church.
Her family, children, g randc h i ldren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life.
She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Buddy Hendricks and his wife Pat and Hilla Hendricks and his wife Patricia; sister, Doris Harris and her husband Jim; and nephew, John Polk Hendricks.
She is survived by her son, Paul and his wife Kathy; her daughter, Lou Dove and her husband, Brad; grandchildren, Erik Christensen, Jennifer Michalec (Jonathan), Bess Wirht (Will) and Claire Wirht (Chris); and great-grandchildren, Christian, Carter, Mabry, Colby and Brooklyn.
A visitation will be held Saturday Aug. 3, at 10 a.m. at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home, with a celebration of Mary Gregg’s life beginning at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to one’s favorite charity in memory of Mary Gregg.
