LA GRANGE — The Smithville Tigers varsity baseball team was shut out by La Grange 5-0 Thursday, April 17, in a key district matchup.
The Tigers struggled at the plate and were held hitless throughout the contest.
Smithville showed early promise when leadoff hitter Jaxson Fraizer reached base after being hit by a pitch in the top of the first inning. However, a groundout ended the early threat and La Grange went down in order in the bottom half.
Smithville was retired in order in the second, and the Lions capitalized back at the plate, scoring two runs on an error and an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
Both teams were scoreless in the third and fourth innings before La Grange added two more runs in the fifth on a groundout and another RBI single, extending the lead to 4-0.
The Lions added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double to make it 5-0.
Grayson Mullen took the loss for Smithville, pitching six innings and recording four strikeouts.
The Tigers dropped to 14-10 overall and 4-5 in district play. They currently sit fifth in the standings, one game behind Caldwell.
Smithville closed the regular season against La Grange after press time Monday, April 21.
