BRYAN – Members of the Lee County Texas Stars 4-H Horse Club attended the 4-H State Horse Show July 22-28 in Bryan. Students competed in events such as roping, halter, drill, sorting, barrels, poles, stockhorse pleasure, horsemanship, trail and more, and placed in several events.

MCDADE – The Hawk Walk at Rising Sun will be from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Rising Sun Vineyard, 233 Edmonson Ranch Rd. in McDade. The interactive walk brings nature up close and personal to guests. Meet with a falconer in a class of no more than 15 individuals and learn about human’s ancient relationship with raptors through falconry. Participants must be at least 10 years old. This summer’s State FFA Agricultural Education Convention brought two of Elgin High Shool’s own future farmers center stage, collecting accolades Elgin has never received before.

In the 1930s there was an organization of young girls in Elgin called Rainbow Girls. They were part of Eastern Star, which was composed of adult women. My mother, Mattie Belle Upchurch Smith, was a Rainbow Girl along with her friends Betty Wilson Dildy and Joy Cole Fromme.

To have a kingdom, you must have a king. In the Old Testament, the Lord gave lofty promises about a future King coming who would be like King David, only better. When Jesus came, He didn’t seem to fit the bill. The wise men could content themselves with Jesus as King, but not Israel. That little baby didn’t really seem like much of a king, even less after He grew up. Jesus said, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20). Nothing regal about that.
