ELGIN – Growth is happening to our region at breakneck speed, but a lot of it is dependent upon how quickly roads can be built, expanded, and made safer through partnerships with different agencies.

The city of Elgin held a swearing-in ceremony for its newly elected City Council Members May 17, with Mayor Theresa Mcshan acting as mistress of ceremony.

On your next drive through historic downtown Elgin, you will see new banners that celebrate veterans of the community. Charlotte Thomas initiated the Hometown Heroes banner recognition program with the approval of the Elgin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6115.

Two new faces have joined the Elgin Courier. Niko Demetriou and Andrew Salmi have come aboard as the senior reporter and area sports editor.

Sydna Davis Arbuckle wrote about the Culp brothers during World War II, in “This and That in Elgin History.” The brothers trained as pilots in Canada because Jack being five years younger than Powell was too young to join the U.S. Air Force. However, when World War II began in 1941, they transferred to the U.S. Armed Forces.

When a questionable source says “trust me,” it throws up red flags. “Just trust me, I will keep my campaign promises,” says the politician. “Trust me, this elixir will cure all that ails you,” says the snake-oil salesman. “Trust me, she runs like she was brand new,” says the dishonest used car dealer. If we trust the word of the untrustworthy, we are fools.
