Elgin soccer teams competing hard

The Elgin High School boys and girls varsity soccer teams continued the start of their seasons this past week. The Wildcats took part Jan. 11-13 in the Copa Akins Tournament in Austin and the Lady Wildcats had a pair of home matches Jan. 9 versus Manor High School and Jan. 12 against Hutto High School.

The Elgin High School girls varsity basketball team under Head Coach Chris Tibbets picked up its first pair of 5A-District 23 wins this past week.

TAYLOR – The Elgin High School and Smithville High School varsity powerlifting teams traveled Saturday, Jan. 13 to the Taylor Duck Invitational meet held at Taylor High School with athletes competing in the squat, bench press and deadlift.

MCDADE – The McDade High School girls varsity basketball team got back in the win column Friday, Jan. 12 as the Lady Bulldogs under Head Coach Aaron Hallford handled business at home with a 47-20 victory in district play versus the Lady Badgers of Buckholts High School.

BASTROP – The Cedar Creek High School boys varsity basketball team continued 5A-District 23 play this past week as the Eagles went 1-1 with a win at home over Elgin High School and a loss on the road at Georgetown High School.

SMITHVILLE – It was easy work Tuesday, Jan. 9 for the Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team as the Lady Tigers went on the road and cruised to a 54-5 win against the Lady Polar Bears of Austin Achieve High School.

Wildcats soccer shuts out Gonzales

MANOR – The Elgin High School boys varsity soccer team under Head Coach Eduardo Lerma continued its start to the 2024 season last week as the Wildcats competed at the Manor Showcase tournament against Klein Collins High School, Needville High School and Gonzales The Wildcats lost 2-0 in the tourney opener to 6A Klein Collins and then were edged 2-1 by Needville with junior Teo Ferrusca scored the lone goal for Elgin.

FORT WORTH – Bastrop County was well represented Friday, Jan. 5 as Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School and Smithville High School all competed in the UIL Spirit State Championships held at the Fort Worth Convention Center in their respective classes.
